Ron Uchman’s Hawthorne analysis for Saturday, October 16th

Race 1

Nobody stands out in this race. I’m going to go with 3-TORN JEANS. Not sure she can get the distance, she tired in her turf routes, but she did run well the last two times she faced claimers and those races were at a higher level than this one. 1-COUGAR stretches back out. This filly might be the quickest member of this field but her best races might have been when she came from off the pace. 5-MISSEN THE POINT finished third the last time she competed at this level. That race was on turf but she was passing runners late.

Race 2

2-MAY WE ALL looks pretty obvious. He’s been facing Minnesota breds for the last couple of months but he’s been in good form and, even prior to those starts, he was running well against open company. Recent speed figures are among the highest of those in here. He should be tough. 7-LOUD N PROUD looks like the main competition. He’s been claimed often and has run well for a variety of trainers. He’s completing the sprint-route-sprint cycle. Although he usually displays speed, I think he’ll be coming late. 1-SIRCORRI is an honest runner that hasn’t often won a lot lately but he does earn plenty of paychecks. His versatility makes him a threat against any kind of pace.

Race 3

3-WHISTLEWHILEYOUMOW was thrown to the wolves after breaking his maiden at Prairie Meadows. He was shipped to CD to run in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor for his next start and then back to Iowa to run in the $100,000 Juvenile. He’ll be meeting far easier here. Adds blinkers for this start and worked an impressive local four furlongs in preparation for this start. Meets a field full of relatively unproven runners. Might be the best of them. Morning-line favorite 5-MAGICIAN STONE is another that couldn’t handle the company at Churchill but he did finish second in the Arlington-Washington Futurity in his previous start. He does own the best (so far) speed figures of any in here. 1-VITALE might be the better of the two Block-trained runners in this race. He has trained well since his maiden win at the end of August. Should be ready for his first start versus winners.

Race 4

1-DOM THE BOMB doesn’t win every one of these short sprints at this level but he seems to win most of them. He has scored in 12 of his 22 races at the distance. He will be on the front end and they’ll have to catch him. 6-ROLLS ROYCE DEAL isn’t likely to challenge for the lead but he is likely to be sitting right behind top choice, and the others that try to challenge him, and try to come on late. 2-GREELEY’S ICE has been in poor form but he does own a good record on this track and he’ll carry only 111 pounds, with his apprentice jockey, while most of his rivals carry considerably more.

Race 5

3-SYMBOLIST didn’t handle turf in last but he was in pretty good form prior to that race. If he isn’t sent right to the lead, he should never be far off it. 4-FLORIDA FLASH stretches back out. He never really contended in his first race of the meet but he was coming off a bit of a layoff and probably needed the race. Figures to be more effective here. 2-MISCHEVIOUS MO is in somewhat better form that the rest. He finished third in his last couple races. Should be able to do at least as well in this one.

Race 6

3-MISS HIGH N MIGHTY tries dirt for the first time. She displayed decent speed in her three races on turf but faded late. Maybe it will be a different story in her dirt debut. 10-PERFECT DIVA is back to facing maidens. She’s had some good maiden races but is already making her 12th start. She could be vulnerable again. 12-SHARP HERO should be a factor if she draws into the race. She has been tiring late in her races but she is getting first Lasix today and that could help if she has been bleeding.

Race 7

2-CHAINMAIL makes her first start in 10 weeks. However, she did have at least four workouts during that time. Her recent races at AP and in Indiana haven’t been all that sharp but she certainly has an affinity for Hawthorne. She won four of her seven starts here, including the last two times she ran here. There will be plenty of speed ahead of her. Could surprise them late. 7-GOOD MONGOLIA could be very tough. This speedy mare has been competitive in most of her recent starts, dating back to 2020. However, she’s primarily a turf runner. Not sure if she’ll have the same degree of success on dirt. 6-HUSH Y’ALL wheels back quickly. She was a convincing winner on opening weekend, in her first race after getting claimed by this barn. She isn’t likely to try for the lead but her tactical speed will allow her to track the early leaders while keeping something in reserve for the stretch run.

Race 8

5-RIDE RICHIE RIDE appears to be the best of these. He was claimed by this barn only six days ago, from a second-place finish in open claimers, and he heads back to Illinois breds for this. His average speed figures are considerably higher than those of his rivals. His new barn does well with their first-time claims. Guessing he earns his second win. 6-POWER THROUGH races on dirt for the first time but he did have a useful drill over the surface the other day. He owns enough natural speed to stay close in the early going and could finish with something left. 3-CLASSOFSIXTYSEVEN is hard to figure out. He’s been in great form this year, racing at Arlington, but he had numerous races here in the past without showing a lot. He comes off a sharp maiden win, where he finished with a ton of run to score. Might try the same thing today.

Race 9

1-DREAMING OF PARIS could win right back. She scored a narrow victory in last, her first start after getting claimed by this barn. Her speed will be enhanced with the stretch in distance. They are going to have to catch her. 7-A DARING DAMSEL could be the main competition. She is taking on somewhat more accomplished rivals today but she won two of her last three races. Devoid of early speed, she’s going to be flying at them late in the stretch. 5-A FAST BROAD was claimed from last by this sharp barn. She’s probably not as quick from the gate as top choice but she’s never going to be too far back. Could make a race of it late.
