Sprint Stakes Provide Exciting Finishes

Sprint Stakes Provide Exciting Finishes

A pair of Illinois-bred sprint stakes took place last weekend as talented groups of sprinters took to the track.  On Friday afternoon, fillies and mares were featured in the $53,925 Powerless Handicap at six furlongs on the fast main track.

Favored in the Powerless was Jean Elizabeth from the barn of trainer Larry Rivelli as she was sent away as the 3-5 favorite.  Breaking sharply in the Powerless was Puntsville for rider C.H. Marquez, Jr. as she was pressed by Jean Elizabeth through the opening quarter in :21.73 and half in a speedy :44:89.  As Puntsville and Jean Elizabeth turned into the lane, neither was willing to give in.  After a lengthy stretch duel, Jean Elizabeth prevailed by a neck over a very game Puntsville.  Meeka rallied to finish third.  The final time for six furlongs was 1:11.03.

Jean Elizabeth returned $3.40, $2.20, and $2.10 for owners Richard Ravin, Patricia’s Hope LLC and Larry Rivelli.  She was ridden to victory by Jareth Loveberry.  Puntsville paid $3.60 and $3.20 while Meeka returned $3.20 to show.  Jean Elizabeth earned $32,355 for her victory.

On Saturday afternoon the boys were the focus in the $55,300 Lightning Jet Handicap, a race that came up with three scratches of Richiesinthehouse, Archiemyboy, and Riv, leaving a field of seven to line up.  The 4-5 favorite off a lengthy layoff was Wynn Time from the barn of Hugh Robertson.

An upset appeared to be in the making as speedy Colonel Klink was chased early by W W Cookie Monster and Wynn Time through a quarter in :22.09 and half in :45.40.  The trio was three across entering the stretch and looked to battle to the wire but both Devileye and What’s Up Dude were gearing up their late moves.

Looking for room aboard Devileye into the lane, jockey C.H. Marquez, Jr. briefly guided Devileye off the rail before diving back down to the fence as a hole opened up.  Devileye responded sharply, flying through the hole to win going away by two-and-a-half lengths.  What’s Up Dude closed down the center of the stretch to finish second while Colonel Klink held on gamely for third.  Devileye stopped the clock in 1:10.23.

After the heartbreaking loss the day prior for owners S. D. Brilie, Ltd. Partnership with Puntsville, they were rewarded with Devileye’s victory on Saturday.  Devileye returned $14.40, $5.80, and $4.00 for trainer Michele Boyce.  What’s Up Dude paid $7.60 and $4.60 while Colonel link paid $5.60 to show.  Devileye earned $33,180 for his win.
