Mavericking Overcomes Stumble to Win Buck’s Boy Handicap

STICKNEY, IL  -- With over three inches of rain falling at Hawthorne Thursday and rain again Friday evening, the Buck’s Boy Handicap was rained off the turf.  As a result, the field was cut in half, with five going post-ward.  The scratches of favorites The Pizza Man, Coalport, and Tazz changed the odds dramatically as Luv Bandit was sent off as the even money choice.

Over a track listed as good, Lassell and jockey Tim Thornton cleared the lead and tried to slow things down on the front end, covering the opening quarter in :26 1/5 and the half in :51 1/5.  Tracked by Luv Bandit down the backstretch, Lassell was challenged into the turn by both Luv Bandit and Dad Are We Here.  Covering three quarters in 1:15 2/5, the trio hit the top of the stretch together while Mavericking and Seth Martinez angled out from the back of the pack.  At the top of the stretch, Mavericking stumbled while the trio ahead battled.  As the field straightened out, Mavericking had regained his footing and began to close quickly.  The closing kick of Mavericking was enough to run by, wearing down the field for a 1 ¾ lengths victory, stopping the clock for the 1 1/16 miles on the main track in1:46 4/5.

Luv Bandit finished second and had to withstand a jockey’s objection from Tim Thornton and fourth-place finisher Lassell for possible whip interference in the stretch.  The objection was dismissed, leaving Luv Bandit in second while Dad Are We Here held third.

Sent off at 5-2, Mavericking returned $7.40, $3.20, and $2.80.  Luv Bandit came back $2.40 and $2.20 while Dad Are We Here returned $3.80 to show.

Winning rider Seth Martinez was pleased with the move to the main track, “It worked out good for us, the horse won.  When I went to shift him out at the top of the lane he kind of lugged in at the same time I wanted to shift out and he kind of caught that heel.”

Noel Vigil got a good effort from Luv Bandit, “The strategy was to race on the pace and we did that.  We were right near the front from the start and we were in good position down the lane but he got a little tired.”

Israel Ocampo was pleased with how Dad Are We Here performed, “I’m really pleased about the way he ran off the layoff.  He ran hard.  I got a perfect trip. I wish we could have had more pace.  Unfortunately I had to lay a little closer than I had planned.”
