La Tia Heads Field for Illini Princess

STICKNEY, IL – Multiple stakes winning and graded stakes placed filly La Tia heads a solid field of eight for Saturday’s running of the $100,000 added Illini Princess Handicap at Hawthorne.  To be contested on the turf at 1 1/16 miles, the 36th running of the Illini Princess will be run as race seven on the nine race Hawthorne card.

The highweight in the Illini Princess at 124 pounds, La Tia has won twice from five starts on the year.  Those wins kicked off her four-year-old campaign as she came off a seven month rest to easily handle open company allowance runners going one mile on the Arlington turf in May.  She came back to win again in fine fashion in the state-bred Lincoln Heritage on the turf at Arlington in June.  She followed that with a third-place effort in the Grade 3 Modesty and fifth in the Grade 1 Beverly D before recently running a close up fourth on the Woodbine turf in the Grade 2 Canadian in her last.  Trained by Armando De la cerda and to be ridden by Israel Ocampo, La Tia is the 5-2 morning line favorite in the Illini Princess.

Second choice at 7-2 in the morning line for the Illini Princess is Kepi as she carries 120 pounds.  Trained by Brian Williamson and ridden by Edgar Perez, Kepi has made just three starts on the year, hitting the board in all three.  She ran second while sprinting 5 ˝ furlongs in her first start of 2013, followed by a third-place effort behind Katie the Lady in her following start, another turf sprint.  She turned the tables on Katie the Lady while stretching out on August 24, defeating both her and fellow Illini Princess entrant Goldway in that start.

Katie the Lady is the pace that could possibly challenge La Tia as she is the third choice in the morning line at 9-2.  Trainer by Michele Boyce and ridden by Francisco Torres, Katie the Lady carries 117 pounds in the Illini Princess.  A winner twice in 2013, Katie the Lady has never finished worse than second at this distance on the turf.
