Frog Finding His Way

It was just an ordinary Wednesday night card at Hawthorne, but perhaps the fans that were there actually got to see something very special. It was the first career start for a horse named Devilfish, most likely named after the legendary Texas Holdem player we have often seen on TV. After winning his initial qualifier on May 20th at Springfield in 1:56.1, the 3 year-old son of Cam’s Card Shark came back and won his second qualifier at DuQuoin in an eye-opening 1:52. he made his pari-mutuel debut in Wednesday night’s 9th race and his performance proved those qualifiers were no fluke and he just might be the next big story in harness racing. All he did was run off by some 7 plus lengths in an astonishing 1:51.2 and he did it totally under the wraps of driver Dave Magee. Trainer Erv Miller must be considering supplementing Devilfish to Hawthorne’s World Series Stake that is part of the Grand Circuit on closing night Saturday, June 17th. In any case, I hope we get to see this future star race at Hawthorne again during the final days of our meet.

The Frog broke out of his entanglement with the darkside just enough to post a modest profit on the Wednesday card. We connected on our first wager, a $5 exacta in race two with Roman Holiday and Holly’s Lyric that got us back $37. We failed to hit in race three before nailing another $5 exacta in the 8th race with Get Real and Winslow Hustler that netted us $73. In race nine our $10 exacta with  Devilfish and Fifty-Fifty added another $43 to the bankroll. Thus, we wagered $110 to get back $153.50.

Original Bankroll: $2,000

Total Wagered: $3,866

Total Return: $3,625.80

Current Bankroll: $1,759.80 (thru Wednesday, 6/7)

Race Two: Harmony Oaks Gi Gi drops out of the filly and Mare Open and will find this field much more to her liking. Ft Apache Annie won’t have to battle Loyal Opposition tonight and we can expect a lot better. We’ll key these two in a trifecta play.

$2 Trifecta Key – Ft Apache Annie (3) and Harmony Oaks Gi Gi (4) on top with those two and Madge’s

Girl (1) and Arizona Helen (2).

Total Wager:  $24

Race Four: Rapid Dialing sat last in what appeared to be a training mile in last week’s first start of the year. He closed well from the back of the pack and should really be ready for his best effort. It’s a big straight play and also a beginning of a parlay.

$50 Win & $50 Place on Rapid Dialing (4).

$50 Win Parlay (Rapid Dialing (4) in the 4th, back on Motu Elite Hanover (5) in the 8th.

Total Wager:  $150

Race Five:  Beach Shark hung tough against a big winner last time and figures to be in the frey once again. Spyware has speed and the rail and should have great position. Mr Bud Weisar follows Spyware out of second tier and should be in a good spot. It’s an exacta box play.

$5 Exacta Box – Spyware (1), Beach Shark (7) and Mr Bud Weisar (11).

Total Wager:  $30

Race Seven: Rated Well actually drops into a nice spot for this and is the horse to beat. Midwich Hanover was a big winner last outing, but must overcome post ten. Impressive Dancer was just that in a fine effort in leg one. Simply, it’s another exacta box.

$5 Exacta Box – Rated Well (3), Impressive Dancer (5) and Midwich Hhanover (10).

Total Wager:  $30

Race Eight: Motu Elite Hanover is right back in against the group he crushed last week. It’s futile to look beyond and we will play him straight up.

$50 Win & $50 Place on Motu Elite Hanover (5).

Total Wager:  $100

Race Ten: Paladin Hanover drops a notch and will be flying late. Battleshoe Deal is back in the claiming ranks and that puts him in the hunt. Sight To Behold always right there at finish. We’ll bix these three in an exacta play.

Total Wager:  $30
