The Pizza Man Heads Field in Buck’s Boy

STICKNEY, IL  -- While the weekend focus is on the Breeders’ Cup races from Santa Anita, Hawthorne will be running races in between those during the Saturday afternoon card with a very good feature, the Buck’s Boy Handicap.  For Illinois-bred turf runners, the Buck’s Boy goes as race seven on the Saturday afternoon Hawthorne card and will be contested at 1 1/16 miles on the Hawthorne turf, which is expected to be less than firm after mid-week rain.

Leading the field in the Buck’s Boy is local favorite The Pizza Man from the barn of Roger Brueggemann.  Drawing the outside of the field of 10 in the Buck’s Boy, The Pizza Man is the co-highweight with Coalport in the Buck’s Boy at 124 lbs..  A winner three times this year, The Pizza Man won the Illinois Owners Stakes at Arlington on September 21 before coming to Hawthorne.  On October 12, The Pizza Man defeated a solid field in the Robert F. Carey Memorial, just holding off a very game Tazz.  On Saturday, The Pizza Man is the 2-1 morning line favorite and will be ridden by Rafael Hernandez.

Coalport is the second choice in the Buck’s Boy at 7-2 as he comes from the barn of Wayne Catalano.  A four time winner in 2013, Coalport defeated The Pizza Man in the state-bred Black Tie Affair at Arlington on June 15 over a yielding turf.  In his most recent start, Coalport took on Silver Max and Wise Dan, running fifth in the Shadwell Turf Mile in a race moved to the Keeneland polytrack surface.  Florent Geroux gets the call on Coalport on Saturday.

Coming off a very game effort in the Robert F. Carey Memorial, Tazz, looks to be the likely pacesetter in the Buck’s Boy.  Trainer by Christine Janks, Tazz defeated optional claiming company at Arlington on September 2 in a race taken off the turf, before running a close-up fifth in the Illinois Owners Stakes and the narrow defeat in the Carey.  Tazz will be ridden once again by Rosemary Homeister, Jr. and carries 118 lbs. as the 5-1 third choice.
