Thawing Conditions Cause Cancellation After Four Races
STICKNEY, IL -- The Saturday Hawthorne card was cancelled following race four as unseasonably warm conditions caused a thaw of the racing surface, making for unsafe conditions. In recent weeks, rain, snow, and temperatures well below normal had led to a track that had held quite a bit of moisture. Saturday was the first day in weeks that temps had risen well above freezing, causing the thaw. The track crew will be working the track through the night to float out the remaining water and racing is expected to go on without issue for the closing day card on Sunday.
In race 4, #2 – Hitthelights appeared to clip heels in the turn, unseating jockey Heidi Rose. Racing immediately behind Hitthelights was Miraculous Mike, who fell over that runner, unseating jockey Inosencio Diego. Both Hitthelights and Miraculous Mike got up and escaped injury. Jockeys Rose and Diego were transported to Loyola Medical Center. Rose was being treated for soreness in her collarbone along with being testing for a possible concussion. Diego was being treated for soreness in a knee.
Hawthorne meet concludes tomorrow with a ten race card
and first post at 1:20 PM. Racing is scheduled to return on Friday, February
21. Hawthorne Race Course is located in
Stickney IL at 3501 S. Laramie Ave. For
