Niles OTB-and-More, Lucky Magee’s, Hits the Finish Wire!

Niles OTB-and-More, Lucky Magee’s, Hits the Finish Wire!

By M. Scott McMannis

There’s nothing like finishing a major project early, and that’s exactly what happened with the opening of the new Lucky Magee’s Racino Grill & Sports Lounge located in the northwest suburb of Niles, Illinois.

Originally, this newest OTB in the stable of Intertrack Partners was projected to be completed in late June or July.  However, a Herculean effort was made to have the facility open for Kentucky Derby Day, the first Saturday in May.

Mission accomplished.  Lucky Magee’s is actually open now, going through pre-race warm-ups before grand opening festivities scheduled for later this week.

“We are excited about bringing this wonderful sport of horseracing to a whole new audience, “stated Sean Hennessy, director of operations for Intertrack Partners.  “The sports lounge in the front of the facility will serve sports fans with plenty of TV’s tuned to all sporting events, plus there will be TV’s tuned to horseracing.”

Added Roman Burko, Lucky Magee’s general manager, “This is also a facility where the horseracing fan will feel right at home and quite comfortable, especially in the teletheater.”

In addition to the sports lounge, capacity 300, Lucky Magee’s boasts The Wire Room, a 100-seat teletheater outfitted with 75 individual carrels.  The Wire Room has three staffed mutuel windows plus a dozen self-serve mutuel machines.

Guests looking for a dining option can partake of the 120-seat Racino Grill dining room.  Off the Racino Grill is a private dining room available for parties of 10 to 30.

If the name of the teletheater, The Wire Room, rings a bell, you are perceptive.  Fans of the popular movie The Sting, with Paul Newman and Robert Redford, will remember the wire room that played a central role in the movie.  The theme of Lucky Magee’s harkens back to the era of The Sting and is accentuated with over 100 photos from that era on display.

But neat old pictures aren’t all on the walls at Lucky Magee’s.  The facility boasts no less than 235 TV’s, including 24 62-inch flat panels.  Each dining table has an individual flat-panel TV.  Sports and horseracing will be all around you.

Grand opening events begin this coming Wednesday, May 3, with the official ribbon cutting ceremony by the mayor of Niles, Nicholas Blasé, accompanied by Bob Bilocerkowycz, president of Intertrack Partners.

On Thursday, May 4, ESPN 1000 (AM) sports radio personality Harry Teinowitz will be on hand from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM offering insights into the Kentucky Derby.

On Friday, May 5, Kentucky Oaks Day, The Score (670 AM) sports radio station will broadcast live from Lucky Magee’s from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.  Behind the mics will be the two Mikes, Mulligan and Murphy.  Advance wagers on the Kentucky Derby can be made on Friday.

On Saturday, May 6, Kentucky Derby Day, doors open at 9:00 AM.  The first simulcast race is at approximately 10:00 AM, and the Kentucky Derby is at approximately 5:00 PM.  Lucky Magee’s remains open through the evening for all night racing and all sports events from around the country, and more.

Lucky Magee’s is located in the Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles, Illinois.  The Center is located at the intersection of Golf Road and Milwaukee Avenue.  Lucky Magee’s is located on the southwest corner of the Center property in what was formerly a Circuit City store.
