Mister Marti Gras Heads Competitive Carey Memorial Field
STICKNEY, IL – With career earnings of over $900,000, Lothenbach Stables, Inc.’s Mister Marti Gras heads a very competitive field of nine for Saturday’s running of the Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap at Hawthorne. The 30th running of the Carey will be contested on the Hawthorne turf course at 1 1/8 miles.
Trained by Chris Block, Mister Marti Gras has won nine times from 33 lifetime starts for $924,464 and has had success over this Hawthorne turf course. At six-years-old, the son of Belong to Me is still going strong as he has been stakes placed in two of three stakes tries this year. Following a solid second against allowance company this spring at Keeneland, Mister Marti Gras ran second to Hogy in the Grade 3 Hanshin at Arlington on May 25. With six weeks between starts, he won the Mystic Lake Mile in a race taken off the grass at Canterbury on July 13. He returned to graded company in the Grade 3 Washington Park Handicap as he finished a close fourth following a troubled trip. In the Carey Memorial, Mister Marti Gras will be ridden by Eddie Perez as he carries 122 lbs. and is the 7-2 morning line favorite.
A local favorite and another who has run well over the Hawthorne turf is The Pizza Man. The Illinois-bred is trained by Roger Brueggemann for national leading owner in victories Midwest Thoroughbreds, Inc. Only four-years-old, The Pizza Man has won eight of 13 lifetime starts with all eight victories coming on the turf. Last fall he won the state-bred Buck’s Boy Handicap over the Hawthorne turf course. In 2013, The Pizza Man has won twice, with victories against a very good field of optional claimers at Fair Grounds this spring and most recently in a game effort in the Illinois Owners Stakes at Arlington on September 21. Ridden by Francisco Torres, The Pizza Man carries 120 lbs. and is 4-1 in the morning line.
Another proven on the grass is Mr. Vegas from the barn of Richie Scherer. The six-year-old looks to be the pace of the Carey Memorial as he has earned $336,158 in 28 turf starts. Mr. Vegas has been lightly raced in 2013, making only three starts. His first race of 2013 came off a year rest as he chased Nate’s Mineshaft the entire way in an optional claiming allowance race at Arlington. He was sent to Saratoga for the New York bred West Point, tiring in the lane in that start to finish seventh. He bounced back though with a near miss to The Pizza Man in his last, caught on the wire in the Illinois Owners Stakes. Mr. Vegas will be piloted by Tim Thornton in the Carey and carries 116 lbs. at 9-2 in the morning line.
