Illinois Derby Draws 111 Early Nominations
STICKNEY, IL – Early Nominations for the Grade 3, $500,000
Illinois Derby closed with 111 total nominees.
The Illinois Derby was relocated on the calendar in 2013 from the first
weekend in April to the third weekend and placed as a prep race for the
Preakness stakes, as well as leading into the three-year-old stakes season. In 2014, the Illinois Derby keeps the same
spot on the schedule as it will be run at one and one-eighth miles on the
Hawthorne dirt course on Saturday, April 19.
trainer Al Stall sent Departing to Hawthorne for the Illinois Derby following a
third place finish in the Louisiana Derby.
Following Departing’s victory in the Illinois Derby, he competed in the
Preakness Stakes then put together back to back wins in the Grade 2 West Virginia
Derby and the Grade 2 Super Derby.
nominations for the Illinois Derby close on April 5 for $500 while horses may
be supplemented into the Illinois Derby for $10,000 on entry day, April
