Hawthorne’s Miller Receives Thoroughbred Times Honor

Award Exemplifies Hopeful Future for National and Illinois Horseracing

STICKNEY, IL – Hawthorne Race Course’s Assistant General Manager, Jim Miller, received a prestigious honor as he was listed amongst the inaugural class of Thoroughbred Times’ “Top 40 Under 40.” The “Top 40 Under 40” list showcases industry leaders under the age of 40 in all aspects of the racing industry from track management to on-track athletes to those behind the scenes.

“Now more than ever it’s important to have strong leaders in the racing industry,” said Tim Carey, 4^th generation president and general manager of Hawthorne Race Course, the 2^nd oldest family-owned and operated race track in the nation.  “Jim has a true love of racing and really sees the industry in whole.  As we fight to stay alive until such time that we get slots at the tracks, we need more people who can foster cooperation across the Illinois industry.”

Miller, 34, has been the Assistant General Manager at Hawthorne for nearly 10 years and has been with the company since 1997.  In that time, Miller has served as the Director of Communications and Public Relations, On-Air Analyst, Morning Line Oddsmaker, and currently oversees all Racing Operations along with day-to-day activities at Hawthorne.

In the last few years, Miller has helped Hawthorne to effectively maintain its handle despite national downward trends.  In 2009, Hawthorne was one of four tracks nationally to have an increase in handle.  Also during this time Hawthorne has increased its average field size and invested millions of dollars back into its backstretch, track and grandstands.

“To be recognized amongst so many great leaders in this industry is truly an honor,” stated Miller. “Also, to see those who have been recognized by the Thoroughbred Times and knowing that all of us are under 40 years of age shows that thoroughbred racing is not dead by any means.  There are so many passionate people with great ideas for a revival of this sport. I’m so thankful to Tim Carey and the Carey family for allowing me to make an impact at Hawthorne for so many years. We are truly a family here and when times get tough, we have shown we will stick together and make things work.  I’m expecting so many great things out of Hawthorne Race Course in the years to come.”

A graduate of Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Miller started at Arlington Park in 1993 before moving on to Hawthorne in 1997.  An 11^th round draft pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1997, Miller played four years of minor league baseball while working fall meets at Hawthorne.  Miller came on-board to Hawthorne on a full-time basis in 2000 and has been with the track ever since.
