Hawthorne Backstretch Update, Thursday, December 27 – 1:00 PM
As we
wind down the racing season, many horsemen have been asking when restrictions
on the Hawthorne Backstretch will be lifted.
Last
week we had a pair of horses which were in quarantine test negative and return
to their original barns. We are
expecting test results back on 6 more horses that are in quarantine today. Should those horses test negative, they may also
return to their barn.
Unfortunately,
a horse that was being monitored while in quarantine deceased on December
24. The horse had tested positive for
EHV-1 on December 12 and has been transported to University of Illinois for a
necropsy.
No
additional horses have been moved to quarantine since December 12, thus leaving
that as the day the “clock” reset for a possible lifting of the
quarantine. That leaves the timeframe as
of today for a possible removal of quarantine sometime around January 10.
During
the time period until the quarantine is lifted, Dr. Folker
will be onsite at times to assist with information and an update regarding an
end to the quarantine. Also, if horsemen
have any questions, please contact your veterinarian and they can contact Dr. Folker.
