Harness Action Returns to Hawthorne on Saturday!

Chicago Harness Racing returns to the in-town track on Saturday, May 6, as Hawthorne Race Course opens their action-packed 37 night meet. During Hawthorne’s six-week run, there will be a bevy of exciting stakes and series that will provide a multitude of harness racing action for both the fans and the horsemen alike. Hawthorne will race six nights a week with a 7:20 p.m. post Tuesday through Saturday and a 6:30 p.m. post on Sundays and on Opening Night.

To highlight the spring meeting, Hawthorne will present a pair of exciting,

“Super Saturdays”. The second annual “Night Of Champions” will be held on Saturday, June 3, and on Saturday, June 17, the Dygert and Carey Finals and two key Grand Circuit World Series races will be held.

On the “Night of Champions” a total of seven championship finals, all with estimated purses of $50,000, will be presented. Illinois Bred 3-year-old pacers and trotters of both sexes will slug it out in four of the finals, while older Illinois-breds will also share the limelight in three events, two for pacers and one for trotters. The “Night Of Champions” events are named after some of the greatest Standardbred stars in Hawthorne and Illinois history. The events are:

The Loyal Opposition     $50,000                  4 Year Old & Up ICF Filly & Mare Pace

The Jimmys Pilot             $50,000                4 Year Old & Up ICF Horse & Gelding Pace

For the first time in history, Hawthorne will be host to the Grand Circuit. A series of eight races are appropriately titled the “World Series” as both the White Sox home park, U S Cellular Field, and Hawthorne Race Course are located on historic 35th Street just a few miles apart.

Hawthorne’s Grand Circuit week will begin on Friday, June 9th, with the eliminations for the Erwin F Dygert Memorial Open Trot, followed by eliminations for the Robert F Carey Memorial Open Pace the following evening. The Grand Circuit week continues through closing night as both the Dygert and Carey Finals, as well as the 2 and 3 years old colt World Series pacing finals, will be featured. The events are:

The meet kicks off in grand style on Saturday, May 6th, with elimination races for both the White Sox and Cubs Pace, while the Muscles Marinara Trot elims go postward on Sunday, May 7th. The finals for those three events are all the following weekend. Finally, the Forest View, Stickney, Berwyn and Cicero Pacing Series’ will return once again with the finals culminating during the Grand Circuit week festivities that will also include a Billings Amateur Trot on Sunday, June 11th.  

There’s a lot going on at Hawthorne and with all of it packed into a 37 night meet, it should be an exciting month and a half on the Chicago Harness Racing Circuit!

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Standardbred meet runs May 6 through June 17 with live racing six days per week – Tuesday through Sunday. Post time is 7:20 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, and opening day, Saturday May 6 (special early post).

Hawthorne’s fall 2006 Thoroughbred meet runs September 15 through December 31 with live racing five days per week – Wednesday through Sunday. Post time is 1:10 p.m.

Hawthorne’s spring 2006 Thoroughbred meet ran February 24 through May 2.
