Flashy American Heads Competitive Sixty Sails

STICKNEY, IL  -- The Grade 3, $150,000 Sixty Sails Handicap drew a very competitive field of eight to contest the 1 1/8 miles on the Hawthorne dirt main track on Saturday.  The Sixty Sails is part of a 10 race card and one of four stakes races on Hawthorne’s marquee spring day that also includes the Grade 3, $500,000 Illinois Derby, Presented by Xpressbet.  Both the Sixty Sails and Illinois Derby will be televised live on WGN TV from 5:00 – 6:00 PM Central on Saturday afternoon.

Owned by Preston Stables LLC and trained by Ken McPeek is 3-1 morning line favorite Flashy American.  The multiple stakes winning and graded stakes placed mare makes her second start of 2014.  Following a third-place finish to close out 2013 in the Grade 2 Falls City Handicap, Flashy American got a four month rest before returning in the Grade 2 Azeri at Oaklawn in her first start of the season.  She would finish sixth in that race behind winner Close Hatches.  A seven time winner on her career with earnings over $425,000, Flashy American will be ridden in the Sixty Sails by Chris Emigh.

Second choice at 7-2 in the Sixty Sails is Sonja’s Angel.  From the barn of Peter Walder, Sonja’s Angel has won nine times and takes on stakes-company for the first time in the Sixty Sails.  A winner of two of her last three starts, Sonja’s Angel ran second against $100,000 Optional claiming company in her most recent start.  Martin Garcia gets the call on Sonja’s Angel.

Trainer Mark Casse sends out Dixie Strike for owner John Oxley as this stakes winner looks for her first graded stakes victory.  Making three Oaklawn starts this spring, Dixie Strike ran sixth in the Pippin in her first start of the year before coming back to run second in the Bayakoa.  Her most recent start was a closing fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Azeri.  Miguel Mena takes the call aboard Dixie Strike, as she’s 4-1 in the morning line.

Martin Wolfson sends out Gamay Noir for owner Chasing Tails Stables.  The four-year-old filly comes into the Sixty Sails off the first graded stakes victory of her career as she upset the field in the Grade 3 Rampart in her last, winning at 49-1.  Tim Thornton takes the call in the Sixty Sails as Gamay Noir is 9-2 in the morning line.

Ana Luisa (Brz) comes from the barn of Todd Pletcher as she makes her third North American starts.  Following a pair of Group victories in Brazil, she tried the turf in her first Gulfstream start, closing quickly to finish fourth in the South Beach.  She comes off a layoff for the Sixty Sails as Rosie Napravnik takes the call for this runner who is 5-1 in the morning line.
