Big Guns Aim for Carey Stake
Twenty-seven horses are eligible for our upcoming $100,000 Robert F. Carey Memorial Pace and the added money event is loaded with aged pacing stars. Both trainers Erv Miller and Tom Harmer each have a trio of talented pacers nominated for the August 4 showdown whose eliminations are scheduled on July 28 at Hawthorne.
Possible starters from the powerhouse Miller Stable are Crawdad, who captured this year’s $121,300 Four Leaf Clover and $43,000 Fox Sports Net Series Finals at The Meadowlands; Timesareachanging, the 2004 Little Brown Jug champion who nailed down almost $1.2 million in his sophomore season, and Western Shore, a seven-time victor this season including an Open at Mohawk last month.
Harmer’s pacers eligible to The Carey include Jeremes Jet (1:48.1, $1.4 million), winner of the $575,400 Breeders Crown, the $593,032 Governors Cup and the $840,000 Metro Championships at two, the $250,000 Windy City Pace, a $50,000 Review and a $48,000 Hayes at three, and winner of a round of the Levy Series, a Preferred and an Open all at Yonkers this year at four
Also possible Carey Pace bound from the Harmer Stable are He Wants It All (1:49.1, $927,925) and I Can Only Imagine (1:50), two more top pacers currently competing on the east coast. The latter won Hawthorne’s $102,194 Enemy At The Gate Championship as a three-year-old
A confirmed Carey starter is Rosebud Stable’s Thisbigdogwilfight, who has established himself this year as the top ICF pacer on the Chicago circuit. Trainer Jim Eaton gave his prize pacer a rest after Thisbigdogwilfight sped to a 1:50.3 mile in his June 8 Cook County Stake triumph at Maywood Park, a world record for a four-year-old pacing gelding on a half-mile track and the second fastest clocking ever in that track’s 61 year history.
“I’m pointing him for the Carey,” said his trainer Jim Eaton, who conditioned the horse to his $45,000 Hothead title at Hawthorne last year. “He has gotten a well deserved rest and I plan on qualifying him this week or next to have him ready for the Carey (July 28) eliminations.”
Thisbigdogwilfight won his first two starts this year before shipping out to The Meadowlands for the Four Leaf Clover Series. However, the horse got sick in New Jersey and was brought back home when he’s been almost unbeaten. In 10 starts on the Chicago circuit he’s won 9 times and was third in the other. Eaton also nominated Third Day, a track record holder at Maywood, and his Free For All pacer Manhardt to The Carey.
